八號風球除下，改掛三號風球，亞視新聞的譚彩雲，十二點半在尖沙咀碼頭外進行直播新聞報導，說了一句說話：「改掛後三號風球後，風勢好明顯減少左一ｄ。」
甚麼為指「好明顯減少左一ｄ」，既然只是「減少左一ｄ」，又怎會是「好明顯」，我在猜想記者這句說話，究竟是有心抑或無意，因為這句評論，背後其實可能蘊藏一個好重要的醫療統計學的大道理。
「好明顯減少左一ｄ」，英文就是「small but significant decrease」，significant者，一般而言指兩者所造成的分別是由於隨機發生的可能性是少於百分之五，，亦即是統計學式的p<0.05。當然，對一些精細的計算，p值的要求越低越好。
舉一個例子，如果有一個實驗去比較一隻醫治血壓的藥物，證明比傳統藥物能夠減少血壓多1mmHg，如果統計學上證實這實驗結果隨機出現的或現率低於百分之五，我們就可以說這隻藥對血壓有「small but significant decrease」，當然大家都知道，血壓減少1mmHg，對病情根本沒有實質的意義。
問題就是，儀器固然可以測量風勢的強度，但究竟一位女記者的血肉之軀．對戶外風勢的敏感度究竟是幾多，一般血壓計可以分辨1mmHg的血壓分別，家用溫度計可分別0.1度的溫度分別，那麼一位女記者可以分辨的風勢究竟是多少？究竟她感覺到的分別，在統計學上是不是「好明顯」，抑或只是一次「隨機分生的事件」？這有待專家解答。

不過我唔覺得記者會識得蒲福氏風級表，只係「隨口up」而已。
佢想講既大概只不過係「風勢好明顯減弱左」。

FYI, there is an interesting book that talks about the distinction between substantial difference (economic significance when used in economics) and statistical significance (rejecting null in classical hypothesis testing).

They criticize the over dependence of using statistical test (statistical significance) to determine substantial difference in the academia. This is not in the mainstream work of economics/econometrics, and there’s still controversies in their arguments, but it would be interesting to those who care about this distinction.

雖然記者係文字運用方面應該係專業些，但係做live唔容易架，好多口頭禪或者有意義既句子會出現，包容一下喇
